Senior Safety Alert: Don’t Get Jugged!

There is a new robbery trend targeting seniors known as ‘jugging.’ When you withdraw money from the ATM, a criminal lies in wait, then follows the target to another location and robs them. Jugging is on the rise nationwide and targets vulnerable seniors – even following them to their own homes and attacking them and taking their cash and valuables.

Authorities have put out a national alert to help people prevent bank jugging:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at the ATM or the bank or stores
  • Look out for someone hanging out nearby such as in the parking lot who doesn’t seem to be occupied
  • Conceal money/bank bag/cash envelope before leaving a bank
  • Make sure no one is following you while you’re driving
  • Surrender your belongings without fighting if you are attacked
  • Call 911 if you suspect you’re being targeted or are a victim of jugging

Another angle on jugging is happening nationwide in stores where robbers target victims shopping in stores by distracting them and stealing their wallets from their purses – often left unattended in a shopping cart. This version of jugging is primarily targeting elderly women.

Senior Safety

Nationwide, senior citizens seem to be the most targeted and most vulnerable to scams. According to the National Council on Aging, financial scams targeting older adults are costly, widespread, and rising. The most common financial scams targeting older people include government impersonation scams, sweepstakes scams, and robocall scams.

You are not alone. There are things you can do to protect your loved one. Talk to an elder law attorney if you have a vulnerable family member who you think is susceptible to elder fraud, crime or scams.
